Four things not to do before I get there.
Thirty minutes is long enough to talk yourself into something you’ll regret. A lockout is $85 or $95; a bent door frame or a cracked window is not.
- Don’t jam a coat hanger down the window.It works in films. In a real door it tears the weather seal and can snap the lock linkage, and then you need a body shop as well as a locksmith.
- Don’t try the credit card.A deadbolt doesn’t care about a credit card, and a latch that does will usually take the card — and sometimes the door trim — with it.
- Don’t break a window to get in.A small back window sounds cheap until you’ve priced the glass and the frame. The lockout is $95. Call first.
- Stay somewhere lit, with your phone on you.In a parking garage, go up to the street level or the attendant’s booth. I’ll call when I’m pulling in.
